Tanga'eo is our first ever Bird of the Year Cook Islands!
Our beautiful Tanga'eo (Mangaian Kingfisher) has been voted the Bird of the Year Cook Islands 2020!
These chunky little kingfishers are found nowhere else in the world except Mangaia, and despite their name, prefer to eat lizards & insects over fish! Happily they have been enjoying a dramatic comeback from their vulnerable status, now that their lowland forest habitat has to some extent been restored following years of pineapple plantations. Named Tanga’eo for the sound of its call, these birds are a symbolic bird to the people of Mangaia.
